ACU Race Licence

ACU Race Licence

To go racing you will need to complete a Compulsory Training Course (CTC) and Basic Riding Assessment (BRA) to obtain your ACU licence. Our ACU Licence Assessments are £145 and in the summer months spanning across a late afternoon to evening. This is the licence needed to race with Road Racing clubs and attend ACU test days. Or - this is a good fast track route to track days if you have a restricted road licence and want to come and play!

Our circuit assessments include top instructors and plenty of 'on-circuit time' to give you the best chance of passing to get your licence. You will get to practice, learn and enjoy riding with 4x15 minute on-circuit sessions and a fifth to practice your 'race start'! More than just a couple of laps!

You also get free membership to the UK's premier bike racing club BMCRC if you fancy racing with them this year. BMCRC members also get a special rate on our track days.

There will be a presentation lasting approximately an hour-and-a-half, by a top Clerk of the course on the safety and organisation requirements to participate, followed by a multiple-choice test.

You must be able to demonstrate that you are a competent rider on circuit and that you can lap consistently in a safe and controlled manner amongst other traffic. You must be proficient in the areas below:

  • Basic machine craft - Can you ride a motorbike?
  • Using the track safely - Throttle control, use of brakes, gears, riding style.
  • Corner Speed and Exit - Hold a reasonable pace, use of lines, circuit rider awareness, obeying flags.
  • Practice Start - Go through the race start procedure. Grid position, sighting, warm-up, start!

We have an excellent pass rate. We are not looking for lap records and although it is a test, you will enjoy it!  If you think that you need some training on track prior to sitting your test, visit the Track Academy page of our website.

A typical itinerary is: Registration 14:30. CTC 15:00. On-track assessments from: 17:30-20:00. Once completed, you will be able to apply for your ACU race licence, entitling you to race and take part in bike track days and test days.

Download and bring with you on the day the ACU Road Race licence application form. Complete the form (except membership payment) before the test including passport pic and eye test. Tick the "Intermediate Novice" box only if you have a road bike licence (then needed on the day as proof).

The on circuit assessment is on your bike. Bikes must be suitable for the intended use and subject to our usual track day requirements (it doesn't have to be a race bike) which can be found in our FAQ section. A motorbike licence is not required but you need good command of a motorbike. One-piece leathers are compulsory. The price for juniors (under 18) is £210 due to lower pupil to instructor ratios - please call to book for under 18 as junior assessments are subject to demand.
